Palestinians are being killed while seeking humanitarian aid in Gaza because the very sites meant to provide food and relief have become militarized zones targeted by Israeli forces. Despite being established to deliver life-saving assistance, aid distribution points—some coordinated through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation—have repeatedly come under drone, tank, and aerial fire. Israel claims it is targeting militants, but eyewitnesses and rights groups report that unarmed civilians, including children, are among the victims. The Gaza Strip, already devastated by blockade and bombardment, now presents a deadly paradox: in seeking aid, civilians are risking—and losing—their lives. This analysis examines the scope of this crisis through casualty data, survivor testimony, legal assessments, and the international response.

Escalating Civilian Casualties Amid Aid Distribution

On June 26, 2025, Gaza health authorities confirmed that Israeli airstrikes and military actions resulted in the deaths of 62 Palestinians across multiple locations in the Gaza Strip. Among the dead were nine individuals killed in an airstrike on a school sheltering displaced families in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City, and nine more in a separate strike near a tent settlement in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Additionally, a drone strike on a market street in Deir el-Balah caused nine fatalities and multiple injuries. Crucially,

“three individuals were killed and others sustained injuries due to Israeli army fire while waiting for humanitarian assistance at a distribution point in the Netzarim Corridor,”

as reported by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

These deaths near aid distribution points are part of a disturbing pattern. Since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began operations on May 27, at least 549 Palestinians have been killed while attempting to secure food from these sites, with over 4,000 injured and dozens missing after attacks on those seeking aid. This staggering toll reflects the extreme dangers faced by civilians in Gaza, who are caught between the need for humanitarian assistance and the lethal risks posed by military operations.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and Militarized Aid Distribution

The GHF, an initiative supported by the United States and Israel, was established to manage aid delivery in Gaza amid concerns about Hamas’s control over resources. However, the foundation’s distribution points have become focal points of violence. Reports indicate that Israeli forces, including drones and tanks, have repeatedly fired on crowds gathering for aid, resulting in mass casualties.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and bloodshed. Amr Abu Teiba, present at one such gathering, stated,

“There [was] fire from directions, naval war, from tanks and drones,”

illustrating the intensity of the attacks. These incidents have drawn international condemnation, with the United Nations and human rights groups warning that the militarized nature of aid distribution violates international humanitarian standards and endangers civilian lives.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned these attacks, stating,

“Deadly attacks on distraught civilians trying to access the paltry amounts of food aid in Gaza, are unconscionable,”

and called for

“a prompt and impartial investigation into each of these attacks, and those responsible held to account”.

The militarized system, which places Israeli forces and private security contractors near aid sites, has been criticized for turning life-saving assistance into a death trap for Palestinians.

The Impact on Children and Vulnerable Populations

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza disproportionately affects children and vulnerable groups. Save the Children reported that children have been killed or injured in more than half of the fatal attacks at food distribution sites since the GHF began operations four weeks ago. The desperation of families, some lacking healthy adults, has forced children to collect food at distribution points, exposing them to grave risks.

This tragic reality highlights the compounded vulnerabilities faced by Gaza’s civilian population. The blockade, ongoing conflict, and restricted humanitarian access have created a situation where seeking aid is a life-threatening endeavor, particularly for children.

The Broader Humanitarian and Legal Context

The attacks on civilians near aid distribution centers raise serious concerns under international humanitarian law. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has emphasized that

“attacks directed against civilians constitute a grave breach of international law, and a war crime”.

The deliberate or reckless targeting of civilians and humanitarian workers violates the principles of distinction and proportionality enshrined in the laws of armed conflict.

Moreover, the wilful impediment of access to food and other life-sustaining relief supplies may itself constitute a war crime. The UN has repeatedly warned that Palestinians in Gaza face the grim choice of dying from starvation or risking death while trying to access scarce aid. The International Court of Justice has issued binding orders requiring Israel to ensure the unhindered provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance to Gaza’s population.

Israeli Government and Military Stance

Israeli officials defend their military operations as necessary measures to combat Hamas militants and prevent attacks on Israeli civilians. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claim that they have fired warning shots at individuals approaching their forces suspiciously near aid sites, denying intentional targeting of civilians. However, Palestinian health officials and eyewitnesses dispute these claims, describing victims as unarmed civilians, including women and children.

Israel’s national security minister has advocated for a total cessation of humanitarian aid to Gaza, a stance that has intensified the blockade and worsened the humanitarian situation. This position reflects the Israeli government’s broader strategy to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages and ceasing hostilities but has drawn widespread international criticism for its impact on civilians.

The Scale of the Gaza Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis

The violence in Gaza is part of a broader conflict that reignited with Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Since then, Palestinian health authorities report over 56,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza, with thousands more injured and displaced. The Israeli military has suffered significant casualties as well, with over 860 soldiers killed.

The blockade and military operations have severely restricted the movement of goods and people into Gaza, leading to acute shortages of food, water, medical supplies, and electricity. The humanitarian response has been hampered by these restrictions, with aid deliveries limited and distribution systems fraught with danger.

International and Regional Responses

The international community has expressed grave concern over the escalating civilian toll and the targeting of aid recipients. Mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are actively seeking to resume ceasefire talks, though progress remains elusive. The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have called for the protection of civilians and unimpeded humanitarian access.

The UN humanitarian spokesperson Jens Laerke described the aid distribution centers as “death traps” for Palestinians, emphasizing the desperation and danger faced by those seeking food in Gaza. These comments reflect the urgent need for a reassessment of aid delivery mechanisms to ensure civilian safety.

The Human Cost: Voices from Gaza

The human stories behind the statistics reveal the profound suffering of Gaza’s population. Families displaced from their homes face the impossible choice of risking their lives to access food or enduring starvation. The repeated attacks on aid sites have shattered any sense of security for civilians already traumatized by years of conflict.

Children, in particular, bear the brunt of this crisis. Save the Children’s findings that children are among the casualties in more than half of the deadly incidents at aid points underscore the tragic vulnerability of Gaza’s youngest residents.

A Call for Urgent Action and Accountability

The killing of 62 Palestinians in recent Israeli attacks, including those near humanitarian aid sites, highlights the urgent need to protect civilians and ensure safe access to aid in Gaza. The militarized nature of aid distribution, combined with ongoing hostilities, has created a deadly environment where seeking basic necessities becomes a life-threatening act.

International law demands the protection of non-combatants and humanitarian workers, and the repeated attacks on aid recipients must be thoroughly investigated. The international community must intensify efforts to broker a ceasefire, lift restrictions on aid, and hold accountable those responsible for violations.

As Gaza’s population endures this humanitarian catastrophe, the world faces a moral imperative to act decisively to prevent further loss of innocent life and to restore dignity and safety to those trapped in the conflict.
